Kate trained as an orchestral timpanist and percussionist at Trinity College of Music from 1986 to 1990 where she gained a graduate degree and a teaching diploma.
She secured the position of Principal Timpanist of the English National Ballet Philharmonic in 1989 and still holds the position today. She also freelanced with most of the major London orchestras and travelled extensively throughout the country and abroad guesting as Principal Timpanist with many regional orchestras.
Together with her playing career in London, Kate taught timpani, percussion and drum kit at the Latymer School from 1989-1999.
Kate moved to Cheshire in 1999 and from 2004 started her baby and toddler classes under the banner MiniMusic.
She then started to teach Early Years and Foundation Stage as well as Key Stage 1 & 2 music at her local primary school.
In 2020 Kate decided to diversify and started to teach groups of elders as part of outreach in the community when Covid 19 locked down the country.
She, together with her husband Dave who is the Principal Percussionist of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, and who also helped to compose and arrange the music in the programme, then started bringing together all their work from over 30 years of experience in the musical education field to devise Music with Kate.
Together with the artistic and computer skills of friend and colleague Bea Schirmer who plays the double bass in the Hallé, Kate and Dave have developed a holistic approach to learning new instruments to help both mind and body to flourish.
